Seward replies: “I am peddling books – anything to get a living. Shall I put you down for ‘The Impending Crisis’” (The Impending Crisis by Hinton Helper was an anathema in the South) Douglas, with papers saying “Squatter Sovereignty” responds: “No, thank’ee, Billy. The impending crisis will put us both down, I reckon.”
