Title: Gulliver Abe, in the White House, Attacked by the Lilliputian Office-Seekers

Year: 1861

Creator: Frank Leslie’s Budget

Description: Patronage was a major concern for incoming President Lincoln. He is portrayed as a very tall Gulliver being attacked by a horde of pestilential office-seekers, who indeed flocked to Washington in March and April 1861. “Gulliver Abe” says: “Well, this is orful! Who’d a’ ever believed such diminutivorous varmints could have had such impudence! Why, they’re creeping all over me! I feel a kinder goosefleshy. Scratch himself couldn’t get rid of ‘em!”
