The Alarm

Title: The Alarm
Year: 1861

Creator: Harper’s Weekly

Description: “On Thursday night Mr. Lincoln was aroused, and informed that a stranger desired to see him on a matter of life and death. *** A conversation elicited the fact that an organized body of men had determined that Mr. Lincoln should never leave Baltimore alive. *** Statesmen laid the plan and bankers indorsed it.”

This is one of four political cartoons in a series entitled “The Flight of Abraham” published on the same page of Harper’s Weekly on March 9, 1861, commenting on Lincoln’s secret trip through Baltimore on his way to Washington for his inauguration.
