Title: Drawing Things to a Head

Year: 1863

Creator: John McLenan, Harper’s Weekly

Description: Dr. Lincoln (to Smart Boy of the Shop). “Mild applications of Russian Salve for our friends over the way, and heavy doses – and plenty of it – for our Southern patient!!”

Lincoln stands by a collection of military items, like greek fire and parrots, gesturing toward two windows with the faces of John Bull and Napoleon III. Seward stands by Lincoln holding a basket with “Russian Salve” in it. When the Russians formally announced their allegiance with only the United States, France and Britain had to rethink their relations with the Confederacy. They did not want to risk war with Russia for the sake of supporting the Confederacy.
